Build option blocks from student choices

Used by more than 100 schools in Korea. It builds option blocks around your school's own rules, such as subjects a homeroom takes together, students to keep apart or together, and a balance of gender and attainment.

01

Even section sizes in every block

It splits subjects into sections across the blocks, places every student and keeps section sizes even. If some students' choices can't all fit, it suggests alternatives.

02

Class-taught subjects

Set up class-taught subjects, where students who chose the same subject share a homeroom and take it together. Use it to form homerooms around a subject or a pathway.

03

Takes your school's rules into account

It forms homerooms to your school's rules, such as keeping students apart or together, balancing attainment and gender, or single-sex homerooms. If a new request comes in after you finish, it changes only the part affected.

04

Leads straight into the timetable

Your finished option blocks carry straight into the timetable setup. It sets up a teaching load sheet from the blocks for each department to fill in online. As lessons per week are entered, it checks in real time whether these blocks can produce a timetable.

Find problems with your blocks before you start building the timetable.

05

Handles changes after you finish

Add students who join, remove those who leave and update changed choices during the year. When a student changes a subject, it shows the sections they can move to, and you can rebalance section sizes afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

You can download the option blocks, sections and homerooms as an Excel file. If you need the results in another format, let us know when you contact us.

Timetable Expert does not collect students' personal data. We only receive the student ID numbers and subject choices needed to build option blocks.

You start by uploading your students' choices in Excel. When you contact us, tell us the format your school uses and we'll let you know what we support.

Upload your students' choices in Excel. It suggests lessons per week, the number of sections for each subject and other settings. Set your homeroom rules and choose which subjects are class-taught, then start. After checking the results, download the option blocks and class lists.

On the results screen, you can change a student's subjects, section and homeroom. You can also swap homerooms, swap blocks and rebalance section sizes straight away, and go back to an earlier version.

For each subject, you can set whether it gets priority as a class-taught subject. Set the maximum number of class-taught subjects per homeroom, and it suggests the subjects that work best this way.

It sets up a teaching load sheet from your finished option blocks and carries it into the timetable setup. When you export the timetable, it uses the option blocks to create student timetables and class lists for each section as well.

It uses MCP, the same open standard used to connect services such as Gmail, Notion and Canva to AI. MCP lets AI look up and enter information in outside services, and many services already connect this way. To set it up, add the address once in the connectors menu of your AI app.

The connection opens only when your school sets it up. Even after connecting, the only information shared is student ID numbers and subject choices. Timetable Expert never holds personal data such as student names or contact details in the first place. When you disconnect, access stops immediately.

You can start without a paid subscription. On Claude's free plan you can add one outside connection, so you can connect Timetable Expert. In ChatGPT, this feature is available on paid plans. You can also use every feature without AI by working directly in Timetable Expert.
